Dramatic Floor Plan Change Transforms This Kitchen

Moving the powder room allowed for a better entertaining space. Some time ago, a former homeowner added an addition to this early 20th century home, and in the process, turned the kitchen into little more than a hallway to the backyard.

The Before

The large island was boxed in between walls creating a cramped seating area, and all the light was in a place nobody wanted to be. The cooking space was tight too.

The After

Relocating the powder room to a more private part of the house created a larger footprint for the kitchen.

One of the design issues was how to tie two very different ceiling heights together. Here, we did this with a thin bulkhead that acts as a lighting shelf in the vaulted space.
